Microsofts "Project Polaris" Replaces GPT-4 Inside GitHub Copilot

At Build 2026, Microsoft named Project Polaris — its own in-house, mixture-of-experts coding model running on Maia chips — as the default engine for every GitHub Copilot subscriber starting in August, ending Copilots dependence on OpenAIs GPT-4 Turbo. Microsoft says it beats GPT-4 Turbo on HumanEval and MBPP, with the biggest gains in low-resource languages, and it ships alongside multi-agent VS Code, where an orchestrator decomposes a task and hands pieces to specialist subagents. After years of reselling OpenAI in the editor, the largest software company on earth wants to own the model itself.
